History of places to the east of Durham City

I have put together a number of web pages about the history of the area to the east of Durham City. These are mostly centred on Gilesgate Moor, Carrville and Belmont but include many of the pits and railways between Durham and the East Durham plateau.

The information has been gathered chiefly from internet sources and is a testament to what the amateur historian can do without leaving the house!  I am, however, familiar with most of the area covered having walked, ran, cycled and driven over it during the past thirty five years.

We are fortunate to have The Durham County Archives and some of the University Libraries at hand for anyone wishing to dig deeper into any of the material which makes up these web pages.

The best visual source for the area is in the series of books produced, by Michael Richardson, of old photographs of Durham.

This site is heavily dependent on images and, unless you have broadband, it may load very slowly.
